Doctoral Dissertation / Information for Applicants

Doctoral Dissertation Presentation

We have doctoral dissertation presentation sessions as follows. Please participate in the session if you are interested.

When joing the session online, display “(Your student ID+) Last name, First name. No nicknames are allowed.

For Doctoral Thesis Applicants

Doctoral Thesis Evaluation Procedure

First, doctoral candidate students scheduled to complete doctorate couse in March (or September) must make a presentation at Dissertation Submission Evaluation in November (or May). After passing this evaluation, the candidates must submit doctoral dissertation by the due date in December (or July). The submitted dissertation will be evaluated and once approved at Departmental Graduate School Education Council in February (or Semptember), doctoral degree will be awarded in March (or September) as shown in the flow chart below. In cases where either students are unable to submit their dissertation by the December (or July) deadline and in cases that the dissertation or examination cannnot be completed in time for the departmental faculty meeting in February (or September), the cadidate must follow the irregular schedule for course doctorates.

Candidates of course doctorate or non-course doctorate must present and pass at Doctoral Dissertation Evaluation in November (or May), and submit dissertation by the previous day of the next evaluation day. The submitted dissertation will be evaluated, and once reported and approved by the Graduate School of Science Education Council, doctoral degree will be awarded.

* Course Doctorate: Candidates who will be awarded doctoral degree after completing doctoral course at the University of Tokyo (includes those left the doctoral program with the course requirements completed who will who will submit doctoral dissertation within 3 years).

1: The right to submit a doctoral dissertation to the faculty of science is valid until the day before the subsequent dissertation submission evaluation presentation.
2: Only relevant to applicants not affiliated with the University of Tokyo.
3: The dissertation should be submitted at Graduate School Office of the School of Science. Only registered students up to D3 level are considered regular schedule course students (completion in March or September). Students who are enrolled but have remained beyond D3, candidates who have left the university without graduating but with the necessary credits and wish to apply for a doctorate as a course student within three years of leaving, and non-course candidates can submit their dissertation (Friday is the normal day for submission). The necessary requirements for submitting a doctoral dissertation must be fulfilled by the day of submission.
4: In cases where students who originally planned to obtain their doctorate as a regular schedule course student but are unable to submit their dissertation by the December (or July) deadline and in cases that the dissertation examination is not complete in time for the departmental faculty meeting in February (or September), the candidate must follow the irregular schedule for course doctorates.
5: For registered students following the irregular course schedule who complete in time to finish in March (or September), the results are reported at the Graduate School of Science Education Meeting.

Requirements for Doctoral Dissertation Submission

Course Doctorate

<Doctoral Candidates Enrolled before 2008>

  • The candidate must have at least one paper related to Earth and Planetary Science, being the first author, accepted by an international journal (The paper can be unrelated to doctoral dissertation).
  • “International journal” is the one included in the list set by the Academic Affairs Committee (PDF).
  • This requirement must be met by the time of doctoral dissertation submission.
  • Doctoral dissertation can be written in English or Japanese, but the former is strongly recommended. In case of Japanese, a long, comprehensive summary and explanation of figures in English are required.
  • The paper can be a original paper or a review paper.

Non-course Doctorate (Ronpaku)

  • The candidate must be related to the University of Tokyo or Earth and Planetary Science Department.
  • The candidate must have at least two papers related to Earth and Planetary Science, being the first author, accepted by an international journal (The papers can be unrelated to doctoral dissertation).
  • “International journal” is the one included in the list set by the Academic Affairs Committee (PDF).
  • This requirement must be met by the time of doctoral dissertation submission.
  • Doctoral dissertation can be written in English or Japanese, but the former is strongly recommended. In case of Japanese, a long, comprehensive summary and explanation of figures in English are required.

Evaluation Committee

  • Presentation session is open to external judges, PDs, and graduate students belonging to EPS Department, and other can also be present once pproved by the chief examiner.
  • Both presentation and Q&A duration are approximately 45 minutes.
  • Q&A will mainly be made by the judges, and Q&A involving other participants must be limited (within 5 minutes). The chief examiner is responsible for the progress of the presentation session.
  • Closed evaluation meeting will be held after the presentation, and the result of the examination will be judged. Judges can ask questions to the presenter if necessary. If the presenter’s supervisor is not a judge, the chief examiner can request the supervisor for participation in the closed evaluation meeting as an observer. If the presenter’s supervisor is not a judge, the supervisor can pariticipate in the closed evaluation meeting as an observer.

Application Under Course Term Exception Provision

Under exception provision, candidates with extraordinary research achievements can shorten doctoral course by 0.5-2 years for completion. (Article 6-2, University Regulations). Contact your supervisor for details.

Reception of Doctoral Dissertation Application

Doctoral dissertation application will be received by the Graduate School Office of the Graduate School of Science. Obtain “Guideline for Ph.D. candidates” from the manager upon applying. A notice for doctoral dissertation application will be made for course doctorate for September or March completion, and refer to this link for other doctorate candidates.

Master’s Thesis / Information for Applicants

Master’s Thesis Presentation

At EPS Department, a presentation made at “Master’s Thesis Presentation” is regareded as the final examination of master’s degree requirement ( Article 5-1, University Regulations). First, the evaluation of submitted master’s thesis (pdf) is conducted by three judges. Then, the evaluation of presentation is carried out by multiple faculty members at the Master’s Thesis Presentation. Final evaluation will be made based on the results of the thesis and presentation.
